Ilay Romain Ors is an Associate Professor of Social Anthropology at the Sociology Department of Deree – The American College of Greece. She holds dual Bachelor’s degrees in Sociology and Political Science from Boğaziçi University (Istanbul), an M.Phil in Middle Eastern Studies and a Ph.D. in Anthropology and Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University. Currently, she serves as a Fellow at Harvard University’s Center for Hellenic Studies, Research Affiliate at the University of Oxford, Independent Scholar at the Independent Social Research Foundation, and Board Member at ACG Institute for Global Affairs and the Istanbul Center for Humanities and Law Advocacy (IHCLA).
Her research focuses on migration dynamics, urban studies, minority identities, intercultural communication, and political relations in Turkey, Greece, and the Aegean region. She explores themes such as cosmopolitanism, diaspora narratives, historical memory, and contested urban spaces. Notable work includes studies on the 1964 expulsions of Greek Orthodox communities in Turkey, transnational migrant identities, and the sociopolitical implications of urban transformations like the Gezi Park protests.
Her publications span academic journals, edited volumes, and monographs, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches. She has contributed to debates on cultural pluralism, historical preservation, and the intersection of space and politics in global cities like Istanbul and Athens.
Ors’s academic leadership includes roles in research institutions and editorial work, reflecting her commitment to advancing critical scholarship in the social sciences and humanities.
