Dr. Ilaria Pozzato is a Senior Research Fellow at the John Walsh Centre for Rehabilitation Research within the University of Sydney's Faculty of Medicine and Health. She holds an MD and specialization in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation from the University of Padua (Italy) and completed her PhD at the University of Sydney in 2021. With over 15 years of research experience, she co-leads Australia's pioneering Neuro-Psycho-Physiological Laboratory for Spinal Cord Injury at Royal North Shore Hospital.
Her interdisciplinary research focuses on understanding physiological and psychological mechanisms of recovery after trauma, particularly using heart rate variability as a biomarker. Key themes include:
- Multidimensional impacts of injury on holistic health
- Neuro-cardiac interactions in spinal cord injury rehabilitation
- Biomarkers for predicting psychological distress
- Integrated biopsychosocial recovery models
Her publications consistently explore trauma recovery mechanisms, with recent work emphasizing neuro-cardiac self-regulation therapies, cognitive impairment in SCI, and biopsychosocial rehabilitation frameworks. Research frequently integrates clinical trials, meta-analyses, and longitudinal cohort studies across mild-to-severe injuries.
Awards:
- 3MT Thesis Competition Award (2019)
- Lifespan Research Day People's Choice Award (2018)
- Ian Scott Mental Health PhD Scholarship (2018)
- JWCRR Scholarship Award (2017)
She currently advises PhD candidate Julia Kang on chronic pain management using heart rate variability and leads multiple grants including the SMART Trial investigating neuro-cardiac therapies for SCI. Her laboratory develops innovative assessment protocols for autonomic and neural function rehabilitation.
