Ilan Wiesel is a Professor in Urban Geography at the University of Melbourne, affiliated with the School of Geography, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. He holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne and previously worked as a Senior Research Fellow at the City Futures Research Centre, UNSW (2009–2016).
His research focuses on social inequality, spatial justice, and urban policy, particularly addressing housing affordability, disability inclusion, and the geographies of elites. Key projects include the ARC-funded 'The Disability Inclusive City' and a DECRA fellowship on Australia's elite neighbourhoods. He has published in journals such as Urban Studies, Housing Studies, and Environment and Planning A, and authored Power, Glamour and Angst: Inside Australia's Elite Neighbourhoods (2018).
Recent work emphasizes disability inclusion in urban infrastructure, housing transitions for adults with intellectual disabilities, and the spatial dimensions of loneliness. He has secured grants from ARC, NHMRC, and AHURI, focusing on topics like accessible housing, decision-making support for people with disabilities, and post-welfare care systems.
