Igor Burstyn, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at Drexel University. He holds a PhD in Environmental and Occupational Health from Utrecht University, an MSc in Occupational Hygiene from the University of British Columbia, and a BSc in Microbiology from the same institution. His research integrates epidemiology, statistical modeling, and occupational/environmental health, with emphasis on maternal/child health, Bayesian methods, and exposure assessment.
Dr. Burstyn's research explores:
- Advanced epidemiologic techniques to correct misclassification bias in public health data
- Impact of environmental/occupational exposures on neurodevelopment and maternal outcomes
- Bayesian approaches for risk assessment in complex datasets
- Methodological innovations in exposure science and industrial hygiene
His publications predominantly address Bayesian correction methods in epidemiology, occupational exposure matrices, and health impacts of emerging environmental threats (e.g., COVID-19, e-cigarettes). Recent work demonstrates strong emphasis on time-series analysis, gene-environment interactions, and bias quantification.
Honors include:
- Canadian Journal of Statistics Award (2022) for dose-response modeling
- Outstanding Contribution to Epidemiology Award (2019) from the American College of Epidemiology
He teaches graduate courses in occupational hygiene and epidemiology, advising master’s/doctoral students and mentoring postdoctoral researchers. Dr. Burstyn actively collaborates on national/international projects tackling occupational health challenges.
