Igor Agostini is an Associate Professor in the Department of Humanities at the University of Salento, where he teaches History of Philosophy at both the Bachelor's and Master's levels. He holds national qualification as a full professor in Italy (ASN, 1st band PHIL-05/A) and is qualified for the role of Professor in France (CNU Section 17). He is deeply engaged in international academic collaboration, serving as Coordinator of the International Doctorate in Philosophy: Forms and History of Philosophical Knowledge, jointly offered by the University of Salento, Sorbonne Université, and Universität zu Köln.
His research centers on early modern philosophy, particularly the works of Descartes and their interplay with late scholastic traditions. He has published extensively, including a trilogy on the concept of God in Cartesian and scholastic thought, and has edited critical editions of Descartes’ Meditations and Kant’s Latin Dissertations. His scholarly contributions appear in leading journals such as Archivio di filosofia, Revue de métaphysique et de morale, and British Journal for the History of Philosophy, as well as with prestigious publishers including Brepols, Oxford University Press, and Springer.
Agostini's recent publications reflect a sustained focus on metaphysical and theological debates in the 17th century, particularly concerning divine attributes, Cartesian epistemology, and the continuity between scholastic and modern philosophy. His editorial leadership includes directing the Brepols series The Age of Descartes and serving on the scientific committees of several international journals and research centers.
He has held visiting fellowships at Princeton University, École Normale Supérieure (Paris), and multiple universities in Brazil and France. He has coordinated national research projects (FIRB, PRIN), served on ANVUR evaluation panels for research and program accreditation, and led the University of Salento’s unit in the PRIN 2022 PNRR project SoPHiA. Space of Philosophical Heritage in Archive.
He actively mentors students and leads institutional initiatives, including directing the Departmental Center for Studies on Descartes and the Seventeenth Century – Ettore Lojacono. He plans to publish the Nouvel Index Scolastico-cartésien, an updated version of Étienne Gilson’s 1913 index, in collaboration with other scholars.
