Dr Ife Okafor-Yarwood is a Lecturer in Sustainable Development at the University of St Andrews, affiliated with the School of Geography and Sustainable Development. She is a PEW Marine Fellow and editor of a six-volume book project on The Law of the Sea in Africa. Her research critically examines environmental justice, maritime governance, and sustainable development in African contexts, particularly focusing on marine resource management and security dynamics.
Her work employs a multidisciplinary approach integrating indigenous epistemologies, legal analysis, and empirical investigations. Key projects include studying gender impacts of fishing conservation policies in West Africa and analyzing governance networks in the Amazon and Gulf of Guinea biomes as part of the RESOLVING project with co-investigators Dr. Lucas De Oliveira Paes and Dr. Laura Trajber Waisbich.
Notable research themes encompass colonial-era maritime boundaries, IUU fishing, technological solutions in fisheries management, and the intersection of ocean conservation with corporate interests. Dr. Okafor-Yarwood has also explored the disproportionate impacts of resource depletion on coastal communities and security.
