Idil Ayral is an Assistant Professor (Lecturer) in the City & Metropolitan Planning Department at the University of Utah Asia Campus in Songdo, Incheon, South Korea. She holds a PhD in Humanities - Urban History from Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Spain, with her dissertation titled "The Emergence of Public Space in Barcelona throughout the 20th Century." Her academic journey includes positions as Visiting Professor at the University of Seoul (2019-2022) and Assistant Professor at Fatih Sultan Mehmet University in Istanbul (2012-2013).
Dr. Ayral earned her MSc in Architectural History from Istanbul Technical University in 2012, with her thesis on "19th Century Garden Kiosks of Istanbul" later published as a book in 2020. Her undergraduate degree is in Architecture from the same institution, complemented by a study exchange at Universidade do Minho in Portugal (2007-2008).
Her research interests center on public space, urban regeneration, sustainable design, and inclusive design, with a particular focus on urban development in Songdo, South Korea and Barcelona, Spain. Dr. Ayral has conducted several student research projects including "Pedestrian Oasis Enhancing 84th Street with Sustainability & Identity," "Analysis of Flood-Prone Areas in Seoul," and "Green Architecture and Climate Resilience." Her work bridges historical architectural studies with contemporary urban challenges, examining how public spaces can be optimized for community engagement and sustainability.
Dr. Ayral's scholarly output demonstrates a clear trajectory from historical studies of Ottoman garden architecture to contemporary urban space analysis in Barcelona and Songdo. Her recent publications focus on underutilized public spaces in Songdo, smart city planning in Seoul, and sustainable urban design. She has presented her research at numerous international conferences including IAFOR 2024, AMPS Barcelona, and AESOP Annual Congress, showing a consistent focus on urban public spaces and their role in community building and sustainability.

As an educator, Dr. Ayral teaches undergraduate courses including Design Contexts, Ecological Planning Workshop, Sustainability in Planning, and The Just City, as well as graduate-level courses such as Climate Change and Urban Policy Seminar and Urban Design Studio. She serves on several committees including the Incheon Global Campus Research Showcase Undergraduate Student Poster Subcommittee and the University of Utah Asia Campus Undergraduate Research Opportunity Grant Committee. Her community engagement includes supervising Hello City in Incheon (which received the DGB Social Contribution Foundation Chairman's Award) and managing the Incheon branch of International World in Korea (IWIK).
