Dr. Ian Zammit is a Research Fellow at the Queensland Alliance for Environmental Health Sciences under the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Queensland. He joined QAEHS in June 2023 to work on the Minderoo Foundation project analyzing plastic additive chemicals in human samples to assess health risks. Previously, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Catalan Institute for Water Research, focusing on wastewater-based epidemiology for pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, and COVID-19 monitoring in urban communities.
His research spans Environmental Health Sciences, Antibiotic Resistance, and Chemical Contamination in biological systems. Key projects include tracking Organophosphate Esters in human urine, analyzing Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in brain tissues, and developing plastic-minimized laboratories. His work integrates analytical chemistry with public health to address emerging contaminants and their impacts on vulnerable populations.
Dr. Zammit holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences from the University of Salerno (2019), a MSc in Environmental Sciences from Stockholm University, and a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry and Biology from the University of Malta. He contributes to collaborative projects like QAEHS HDR Student Programs and HyTECH laboratory design, with a focus on chemical exposure pathways and biomonitoring.
His recent publications examine trends in plastic additives, phthalates, and industrial chemicals using urine biomonitoring and wastewater analysis. Articles highlight the role of carbon chain length in PFAS accumulation, UV photocatalysis for pathogen inactivation, and ARGs (Antibiotic Resistance Genes) in agricultural systems. His methodology bridges analytical chemistry, epidemiology, and environmental forensics.
Dr. Zammit supervises PhD projects including "Contaminants of Emerging Concern in QLD Wastewater", "Pollutants Crossing Blood-Brain Barrier", and "Human Exposure to Benzotriazoles", collaborating with advisors like Professor Jochen Mueller and Dr. Fisher Wang. He is associated with the Minderoo Centre for Plastics and Human Health and participates in national chemical monitoring initiatives.
