Professor Ian Walden is a leading academic in Information and Communications Law at Queen Mary University of London, affiliated with the School of Law and the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS). He served as Director of CCLS from 2018 to 2022. His expertise spans cybercrime, telecommunications regulation, data protection, and cloud computing law. He teaches postgraduate courses on EU Data Protection Law, Cybercrime, and Legal Tech at Queen Mary’s LLM programmes in London, Paris, and online.
Research focuses on cross-border access to electronic evidence, cybersecurity frameworks, and legal challenges in emerging technologies. He co-leads the Cloud Legal Project, funded by Microsoft, and has contributed to global law reform initiatives for the World Bank, EU Commission, and UNCTAD. His notable works include Telecommunications Law and Regulation (5th ed., 2018) and Computer Crimes and Digital Investigations (2nd ed., 2016).
Prof. Walden has held roles in governance and policy-making, including membership in the UK Council for Child Internet Safety (2010–2012), the European Commission’s GDPR Expert Group (2017–2021), and the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority (2020–present). His public engagement includes leading Queen Mary’s qLegal initiative and advising on digital evidence, surveillance policies, and cloud computing contracts.
Articles span cybersecurity, EU regulatory frameworks, and the legal implications of digital technologies. His work emphasizes practical solutions for data governance, privacy, and balancing innovation with accountability in emerging fields like the Internet of Things and AI.
