Ian Shapiro is the Sterling Professor of Political Science and Global Affairs at Yale University, where he has taught since 1984. He previously served as Chair of the Political Science Department (1999–2004) and as Henry R. Luce Director of the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies (2004–2019). Shapiro holds a J.D. from Yale Law School and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Yale University. His research focuses on democracy, justice, and the methodologies of social inquiry, with recent emphasis on economic insecurity and the distribution of wealth. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Shapiro has authored influential books such as Politics Against Domination (2016), Responsible Parties: Saving Democracy from Itself (2018), and Uncommon Sense (2024). His current work explores the relationship between democracy and economic risk.
