Ian Murray is a Professor at the UWA Law School, The University of Western Australia, specializing in the intersection of not-for-profit law, taxation, trusts, and corporate governance. His research examines charity reserves, Indigenous benefit structures, and philanthropic intermediaries. He coordinates the Not-for-profit Researchers' Network and chairs the Charity Law Association of Australia and New Zealand.
Professor Murray teaches Legal Issues for Not-for-profit Entities, Corporations Law, Income Taxation Law, and Resources Taxation. He holds a PhD from the University of Tasmania, LLM from UNSW, and LLB and BSc (Honours) from UWA.
His current projects include analyzing organizational purpose characterization, governance as purpose loyalty, legal restraints on charity reserves, and timing dimensions of philanthropic intermediaries. He applies advanced analytical tools to evaluate native title asset management structures.
Murray has received prestigious awards including the Virginia A. Hodgkinson Research Book Prize and multiple teaching awards. His grant-funded research includes projects on charity reserves accessibility and Indigenous benefits management.
