Dr. Ian Munanura is an Associate Professor at Oregon State University in the Department of Forest Ecosystems & Society under the College of Forestry. His work bridges sustainable tourism, rural community development, and participatory wildlife management, focusing on social-ecological systems in tropical and temperate regions.

His research investigates barriers to forest-based recreation for marginalized communities in the Pacific Northwest and human-wildlife conflict mitigation strategies in Africa through ecotourism and integrated conservation-development projects. Recent publications highlight cognitive appraisal frameworks for resident tourism support, livelihood resilience, and policy impacts on forest communities.
Dr. Munanura advises graduate students and has managed USAID-funded programs, serving as Country Program Director for the Wildlife Conservation Society in Rwanda and leading the Forest Landscape Restoration Program for the International Union for Conservation of Nature in East and Southern Africa.
