Professor Ian Maclachlan is a Professor of French Literature and Fellow of Merton College at the University of Oxford. He holds an M.A. and D.Phil. His primary affiliation is within the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages, specifically the French Department. His research focuses on 20th-century French literature and philosophy, particularly the interplay between these fields. Notable areas of interest include literary time, life writing, deconstruction, and the works of thinkers like Blanchot, Derrida, and Beckett.
He teaches undergraduate courses on French language, literature, and modern thought, while supervising graduate students on topics ranging from Proust to contemporary French poetry. His recent work explores 'Life Poetry' in French literature and earned him the 2024 Modern Language Review Article Prize for an analysis of ecocritical life-writing.
