Dr. James Martell is an Associate Professor of French and Comparative Literature at Lyon College, housed in the Alphin Humanities Building. He holds a Licenciatura from Universidad Iberoamericana, an M.A. from the University of Kansas, and a Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame. His research focuses on modernist literature, Derrida's philosophy, and the intersections of literature, art, and film. He currently leads the Film minor program and teaches advanced courses in French (e.g., 20th-century French literature) and English (e.g., Creative Writing Workshop in Fiction).
Key research interests include plastic theory, posthumanism, Beckettian aesthetics, and Derrida's engagements with literature and philosophy. He has authored books like Modernism, Self-Creation, and the Maternal (2019) and Beckett and Derrida (forthcoming), co-edited volumes on Samuel Beckett and tattooed bodies, and is completing a book on surfaces of thought in European literature and philosophy.
His recent articles explore topics such as Derrida's sound theory, Beckett's ethical dimensions, and interdisciplinary body inscription studies. He has taught cross-disciplinary courses blending literature, art, and philosophy, reflecting his commitment to intertextual and multimodal scholarship.
