Dr. Ian Lewis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary. He serves as the Director of the Alberta Centre for Advanced Diagnostics and holds the UCalgary Research Excellence Chair. He is also a Full Member of The Calvin, Phoebe and Joan Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science (Summa Cum Laude) in Biology from Fort Lewis College (2003), a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2010), and postdoctoral training at Princeton University and Harvard University.
Dr. Lewis's research focuses on infectious diseases and metabolic adaptations of human pathogens. His laboratory investigates host-pathogen metabolic dynamics using mass spectrometry and NMR technology to develop novel diagnostic methods and antimicrobial therapies. Key research areas include metabolic adaptations in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, hemoglobin metabolism in malaria parasites, and advanced analytical techniques for metabolomics.
Dr. Lewis has received significant recognition for his work including the Innovation Award for Early Career Researchers and Alberta Innovates Chair in Translational Health. He leads multiple initiatives including the Lewis Research Group, Calgary Metabolomics Research Facility, and ResistanceDB project.
