Ian Jeffress is an Associate Professor at Western Carolina University (WCU), affiliated with the School of Music within the David Orr Belcher College of Fine and Performing Arts. He serves as a saxophonist with the Asheville Symphony Orchestra and is the alto saxophonist of the Assembly Quartet. He has received notable awards, including the WCU Teaching Award and the Nolte Award for excellence in teaching. Jeffress holds a DMA from the University of South Carolina, an MM from Ithaca College, and a BM from Furman University.
His research focuses on contemporary music, applying narrative theory to post-tonal works, and commissioning new compositions from composers like Marilyn Shrude and Shih-Hui Chen. He actively promotes new music through performances with ensembles such as the Florence Symphony Orchestra and the Western Carolina Artist-in-Residence Orchestra. As an educator, he co-founded the Assembly Quartet Saxophone Workshop and maintains a private studio in Asheville, emphasizing practice strategies and tone production. He is developing a multimedia method book for music education.
Jeffress has performed at venues including the World Saxophone Congress and the College Music Society national conference. His teaching and performance activities highlight a commitment to both traditional and innovative musical practices.
