Professor Ian James holds the position of Professor of Modern French Philosophy and Literature within the Department of French at the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics, University of Cambridge, and is affiliated with King's College. His scholarly work critically engages with the intersections of contemporary French philosophy, literary theory, and biological thought, establishing him as a leading figure in post-continental philosophy.
James' research centers on twentieth-century and contemporary French philosophy, with specialized expertise in Jean-Luc Nancy, Catherine Malabou, Bernard Stiegler, and François Laruelle. His investigations examine philosophy's relationship with aesthetics, political theory, and scientific frameworks, particularly through projects on biodeconstruction, literary naturalism (focusing on Proust and Quignard), and reconceptualizing community as 'open community' and 'bio-community.'
His recent publications reveal a pronounced trajectory toward philosophical naturalism integrated with biological and literary frameworks. Dominant themes include biosemiotics, plasticity, and community reconfiguration amid ecological and technological challenges, demonstrating consistent innovation in post-deconstructive thought.
Professor James actively supervises postgraduate researchers including Andrew Sackin-Poll, Solange Manche, Bejamin Saffel, and Henry Zhang, and encourages prospective MPhil and PhD candidates to contact him regarding research aligned with his expertise in French philosophy, literary theory, and interdisciplinary approaches to biological thought.
