Dr. Ian Hosier is a Research Fellow at the University of Southampton's Electrical Power Engineering department, affiliated with the Tony Davies High Voltage Laboratory. His research focuses on dielectric materials, aging mechanisms, and polymer morphology, particularly in high-voltage applications. He holds a PhD in polymer physics (1992) from the University of Reading, funded by National Grid, followed by postdoctoral work in Germany/Japan and a stint at Florida State University (2001) studying polymer blends. Since 2003, he has been at Southampton investigating insulation material aging for power systems.
Current projects include the National Grid-funded IDEAL project on synthetic/natural ester aging and ABB collaboration on HVDC cable materials. He has contributed to over 10 peer-reviewed publications since 2020, focusing on transformer insulation systems, boron nitride nanocomposites, and oil-paper interaction dynamics. His work bridges fundamental material science with practical high-voltage engineering challenges.
Research collaborations include institutions like Florida State University and industry partnerships with ABB. He has advised on multiple projects involving thermal/UV aging studies and insulation material characterization, leveraging advanced microscopy and chromatography techniques. His lab facilities enable comprehensive analysis of dielectric material performance under operational stresses.
