Ian Freeman holds the position of Visiting Teaching Fellow at Staffordshire University and serves as a visiting lecturer at the University of Lincoln and Anglia Ruskin University. He is the Higher Education Lead in Sport and Exercise Science (Coaching) at Grantham College, specializing in athlete and coach development across multiple disciplines. His career spans over two decades, supporting Olympians, Paralympians, and professional athletes in sports such as football, triathlon, and cycling through innovative coaching methodologies and scientific approaches.
Freeman's expertise includes sport coaching pedagogy, long-term athlete development (LTAD), and physical literacy. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Sport Science from St Mary’s University and is completing a Professional Doctorate (D.Prof) at Leeds Beckett University, with a focus on athlete development frameworks. His work integrates technical skill development with multi-disciplinary performance strategies, emphasized through collaborations with National Governing Bodies (NGBs) like Swim England and British Swimming.
He has authored key publications including chapters in Swim England’s coaching manuals and contributed to resources like the Swimfit Workout Programmes and Success is Long Term Pathway. His research emphasizes translating scientific principles into practical coaching solutions, as seen in peer-reviewed work on the Athlete Development Support Pathway (ADSP) and video-based educational content for BBC TV and Swim England’s YouTube channel.
Freeman has secured £45k in grants (HTQ and training funding from Gov.uk) and received institutional recognition through awards like the Whatuni Student Choice Awards (2023) for Facilities and Social Inclusion. His professional memberships include FINA and the International Physical Literacy Society.
