Ian D Thompson is a Senior Lecturer in Media and Creative Industries at the School of Design and Creative Industries, University of Greenwich, within the Faculty of Law, Arts and Social Sciences. He has taught at the university since 2003, leading undergraduate programmes in Creative Industries, Media Arts Practice, and Digital Arts.
Thompson's research spans Art and Design history, practice, and theory with a focus on interdisciplinary creative work. His practice integrates music, sound, and video across experimental and commercial contexts, demonstrated through European exhibitions including collateral shows at the Venice Biennale (2017, 2019). Key projects like The Cosmic Pond explore sonification of natural phenomena, merging environmental science with artistic expression through hydrophone recordings and bat detectors in the North Pennines.
His industry background includes senior roles at Somethin' Else (developing BBC radio online strategies) and Razorfish (early web development for FT.com/Benetton), plus co-directing a 3D audio production studio. Thompson actively performs as a cellist and was bass guitarist for an internationally acclaimed 1990s music group, maintaining strong connections between academic work and professional creative practice.
