Chanan Hanspal is a Senior Lecturer in Music and Course Leader for the BA (Hons) Music Performance degree at Anglia Ruskin University, where he is affiliated with the Cambridge School of Creative Industries within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences.

Research Interests: Hanspal specializes in music theory and performance, improvisation, composition and jazz guitar techniques. His research particularly focuses on music analysis, jazz improvisation, performance techniques, and the music of Frank Zappa. As a composer and guitarist with extensive industry experience since 1993, his work bridges academic theory with practical musical application, examining the intersection of technical proficiency and creative expression in guitar performance.
Publications: Hanspal has published numerous articles in Guitarist magazine focusing on rock guitar techniques of renowned musicians. His publications demonstrate a consistent scholarly approach to analyzing and explaining distinctive styles of influential guitarists across multiple genres, with particular attention to technical approaches, improvisational methods, and compositional techniques. His work reveals a deep understanding of both theoretical frameworks and practical applications in guitar performance.

Teaching and Professional Experience: Hanspal teaches modules including Dots, Lines and Waves; Chords, Contours and Grooves; Popular Music Performance; and Songwriting. With a career spanning since 1993, he has performed and recorded with notable artists including John Medeski, Roots Manuva, Jazz Jamaica, Kylie Minogue, Jeff Lorber, Jay Kay (Jamiroquai), and former Miles Davis musicians Bill Evans and Mike Stern. His original compositions have received international radio play on Jazz FM and the Gilles Peterson Show on BBC Radio One, and he has recorded for major labels including Virgin, Sony, Dorado and Instinct Records, in addition to independently releasing multiple solo albums.
