Ian Carter-O'Connell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Santa Clara University, within the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on understanding the role of ADP-ribosylation in human physiology and disease, particularly in cancer. He holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Harvard University and a B.A. in Biochemistry from The Colorado College.
Research Interests: Dr. Carter-O'Connell's lab investigates ADP-ribosylation mechanisms in cellular processes such as signal transduction, gene regulation, and cancer progression. Using biochemical and chemical genetics approaches, his team develops tools to study enzyme specificity and target identification for PARP family proteins. Techniques include mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF), proximity-dependent labeling, and engineered enzyme variants.
Education Background:
- Ph.D. Biochemistry, Harvard University
- B.A. Biochemistry, The Colorado College
Laboratory Activities: The Carter-O'Connell Lab trains undergraduates in advanced biochemical techniques, emphasizing hands-on research in post-translational modifications and their pathophysiological implications. Current projects explore PARP14's cellular targets and ADP-ribosylation dynamics using innovative analytical methods.
