Iakovos Tzanakis

Professor Iakovos Tzanakis holds a position at Oxford Brookes University's School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics (ECM), where he leads the Sustainable and Resilient Futures (SRF) Network and the Materials Processing and Modelling (MPM) research group. He also heads the CAV-iT Lab. His academic journey includes roles as a Lecturer (2016), Senior Lecturer (2017), Reader (2018), and Professor (2019). Prior to this, he was a Research Fellow at Brunel University London (2013–2016) and Bournemouth University (2010–2012). His education includes a PhD in Tribology and Design (Bournemouth University, 2010), an MSc in Energy Systems (University of Strathclyde, 2007), and a BEng in Mechanical Engineering from Greece (2005).

His research focuses on cavitation processing, bubble dynamics, and ultrasonic applications across materials science and environmental engineering. Key areas include ultrasonic melt treatment of aluminum alloys, PFAS wastewater purification, and graphene synthesis using eco-friendly methods. He employs advanced tools like high-speed cameras, synchrotron X-ray radiography, and acoustic diagnostics. His work bridges experimental and computational methods, with contributions to energy systems (e.g., wind turbines) and biomedical applications (e.g., drug delivery).

Prof. Tzanakis has secured significant funding, including EPSRC grants (e.g., UltraMelt2, EcoUltra2D) and Royal Society support. He has authored over 100 publications (H-index 30), with notable contributions to journals like Carbon, Ultrasonics Sonochemistry, and Physics of Fluids. His research has attracted global media attention, including features in Forbes and BBC News.

He supervises 2 Research Fellows, 3 PhD students, and numerous MSc students. His professional roles include Guest Editorships for high-impact journals and external evaluations for Chinese universities. His work aligns with sustainable engineering principles, addressing challenges in materials, energy, and environmental science.
