Iain Macdonald is an Associate Professor at Edinburgh Napier University's School of Arts and Creative Industries. With over 25 years of creative industry experience as an award-winning television graphic designer at BBC Television and as a film and commercials director at The Moving Picture Company, he brings substantial professional expertise to his academic role. He joined Napier in 2010 on the BDes Graphic Design programme and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2015. Between 2017-2018, he served as an Associate Dean at London College of Communication, University of the Arts London, where he leveraged his industry expertise in VFX and animation to develop new program portfolios.
His research interests focus on graphic design, moving image design, and design education, with particular emphasis on:
- Hybrid practices combining digital and heritage media in moving image design
- Intercultural competencies in design education
- Socially conscious design pedagogy for global citizenship
- Television graphic design and audience engagement
- Design for public health and community development
