IGNACIO MIGUEL PALACIOS MARTINEZ

Ignacio M. Palacios Martínez is a Full Professor in the Department of English and German Philology at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), Faculty of Philology. He has been a central figure in English Philology, contributing significantly to research, academic leadership, and teacher training in Spain and internationally.

His research focuses on Second Language Teaching and Learning, Syntax (especially the polarity system), and Sociolinguistics, with particular interest in teenage language and Multicultural London English. He leads the SPERTUS (Spoken Research Team at the University of Santiago) and has compiled two major learner corpora: SULEC and CAES, advancing empirical research in language acquisition.

Palacios has published over 50 articles in prestigious journals such as Journal of English Linguistics, Journal of Pragmatics, Text and Talk, and English World-Wide. He serves on the editorial boards of several key journals including Atlantis, RESLA, VIAL, and ICAME Journal.

He earned his Ph.D. with distinction from USC in 1993, with a thesis on EFL teaching in Spain, supervised by Dra. Teresa Fanego. He holds a Master in TEFL from the University of Reading (UK) and a degree in English from USC (1981). He also taught at the University of Lincoln, Nebraska, and has been invited to lecture at numerous universities across Spain and abroad.
