Håvard Helland

Håvard Helland is a Professor at Oslo Metropolitan University, affiliated with the Centre for the Study of Professions within the Faculty of Social Sciences. His research focuses on sociology of education, labor markets, and social inequalities, with a strong emphasis on quantitative methodologies. He has led multiple research projects and currently supervises six PhD students.

His research interests center on social stratification, educational choice, youth transitions, and professional labor markets. He investigates how class, ethnicity, and gender influence educational and career outcomes, particularly within the context of Norwegian society. His work often compares educational fields and examines dropout and completion patterns in higher education. Helland has contributed extensively to understanding inclusive teaching practices and the effects of automation on meaningful work.

The trend in his recent publications shows a consistent focus on educational inequality, particularly in higher education dropout and completion, with increasing attention to comparative Nordic studies and policy-relevant research. His work combines robust quantitative analysis with sociological theory, often drawing on large-scale survey data.

He served as co-editor of Sosiologi i dag from 2004 to 2006 and is a regular referee for national and international journals.

Helland supervises several PhD students and has led major research projects such as AUTOMA (automation and meaningful work), PERSIST (dropout in professional education), ProTrust (occupational prestige), and IMaT (inclusive mathematics teaching). He has also contributed to public discourse through media appearances and policy-relevant research reports.

He is a member of the Center for Urban Equality Research, Oslo (CURE Oslo), and collaborates extensively on projects related to educational equity and professional careers.
