Håvard Hegre serves as Dag Hammarskjöld Professor of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University's Department of Peace and Conflict Research and as Research Professor at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO). His academic career spans over two decades of research on the relationships between development, democratization, and peace.
Hegre's primary research interests focus on forecasting armed conflict, economic consequences of armed conflict, measurement of democracy, and climate change's impact on conflict. Since January 2017, he has directed ViEWS (Violence Early-Warning System), a major project developing predictive models for political violence. His work bridges theoretical political science with practical applications for conflict prevention.
Hegre's publication record demonstrates consistent focus on conflict prediction and democratic processes. His recent work (2023-2025) shows increased emphasis on integrating protest data into forecasting models, evaluating early warning systems, and exploring the intersection of climate change, socioeconomic pathways, and conflict. The research employs sophisticated quantitative methods and often involves large collaborative projects.
