Hyunjoon Park is the Korea Foundation Professor of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, affiliated with the School of Arts & Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and specializes in social stratification, education, family dynamics, and East Asian studies. His research examines how institutional contexts like schools and family structures influence educational outcomes, with a focus on Korea and comparative analyses. He directs the James Joo-Jin Kim Program in Korean Studies and has held leadership roles in academic organizations. Park has authored/co-authored over 80 peer-reviewed articles and multiple books, including Korean Families Yesterday and Today (2020).
Education: Ph.D. (2005) and M.S. (2003) in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; M.A. (1997) and B.A. (1995) in Sociology from Sungkyunkwan University.
Research Interests: Cross-national educational inequality, single-sex schooling impacts, family structure effects on child outcomes, and East Asian demographic transitions. His work combines large-scale data (e.g., PISA) with longitudinal studies to assess policy implications.
Grants & Awards: Over $5M secured from NSF, Academy of Korean Studies, and others. Recognitions include the Spencer Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship (2008–09) and Best Article Award from Statistics Korea (2012).
Teaching: Courses on social stratification, East Asian societies, and quantitative methods. Advised over 20 doctoral students, many now in academic positions globally.
Labs/Initiatives: Leads the Korean Millennials research project and co-directs the Asia-Pacific Education, Language Minorities, and Migrant (ELMM) Network. Active in policy dialogues on education reform in Korea and East Asia.
