Anthony A. Hyman is a Professor and Director of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG) in Dresden, Germany. He previously served as Managing Director of MPI-CBG (2010–2013) and Group Leader at EMBL Heidelberg (1993–1999). His research focuses on cell division mechanisms, biomolecular condensates, and phase separation in cellular organization. Hyman holds a BSc in Zoology from University College London (1984) and a PhD in Molecular Cell Biology from King’s College Cambridge (1988).
Key research interests include mitosis, polarity, genomics, and non-membrane-bound cellular compartments. His groundbreaking work on liquid droplet formation in cells earned him the 2023 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences and the 2021 Wiley Prize. Hyman has been recognized with numerous awards, including the EMBO Gold Medal (2003), Leibniz Prize (2011), and membership in the Royal Society (2007).
His lab investigates cellular condensates using interdisciplinary approaches, blending biophysics, genetics, and cell biology. Recent studies explore how phase-separated compartments drive cellular processes like mRNA localization and organelle formation. Hyman’s leadership at MPI-CBG fosters collaborative research environments, emphasizing innovation in cell biology and systems-level analyses.
