Huub Brouwer is an Assistant Professor of Ethics and Political Philosophy at Tilburg University, affiliated with the Department of Philosophy within the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences. He holds a PhD from Tilburg University, with earlier degrees from Erasmus University, the Stockholm School of Economics, and University College Utrecht. His research focuses on distributive justice, taxation, desert theory, and the ethics of markets, with additional interests in the future of work, meritocracy, and wellbeing.
Education: PhD in Philosophy (Tilburg University), MA (Erasmus University), MSc (Stockholm School of Economics), BA (University College Utrecht). He has held visiting positions at Gothenburg University, Oxford, Pompeu Fabra University, and Yale.
Research Interests: Brouwer’s work bridges moral and political philosophy, emphasizing topics such as taxation philosophy, desert claims, and the ethics of economic systems. He critiques meritocratic frameworks and explores the moral implications of automation on work. His recent projects include a 4-year NWO Veni grant on taxation philosophy and editorial roles at the Journal of Ethics and the Erasmus Journal for Philosophy and Economics.
Grants & Activities: Treasurer of the AVV labor union and the Month of Philosophy, advocating for employee rights and intellectual engagement. Active in public philosophy through blogs, media commentary, and organizing debates on societal issues like wealth taxation and climate policy.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with the Erasmus Institute for Philosophy and Economics (EIPE) and contributes to interdisciplinary projects on economic ethics and justice.
