Hunter Schafer is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington. He received his B.S. in Computer Science in 2016 and his M.S. in Computer Science in 2018, both from the University of Washington.
Dr. Schafer specializes in computer science education with a focus on making essential topics accessible to students from diverse academic backgrounds across campus. His expertise spans introductory programming, data structures and algorithms, data science, and machine learning education.
He has led the development of CSE 163: Intermediate Data Programming materials and was a significant contributor to CSE/STAT 416: Introduction to Machine Learning. His educational innovations include the Open-Source Lessons project for CSE 163 and the CSE/STAT 416 Textbook Project, both designed to provide accessible learning resources for students.
Dr. Schafer has developed several educational tools including Java-2-Python (a guide for Java programmers learning Python) and Teaching Toolshed (a repository of Python scripts for course management). His work demonstrates a commitment to pedagogical excellence and creating high-quality educational resources for computer science students.
