Dr Humaira Chowdhury is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the King’s India Institute, King’s College London, affiliated with the School of Global Affairs and the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy. Her work focuses on UK-India trade dynamics, diasporas, migration immobility, and Muslim communities in South Asia. She holds a PhD and MPhil in History from the University of Cambridge, with additional expertise in Sociology and Social Policy.
Her research explores themes such as artisan-labour histories, post-partition Calcutta’s socio-economic dynamics, and Muslim women’s agency in postcolonial India. Notable projects include an ESRC-funded study on UK-India trade barriers and fieldwork on contraceptive use among Muslim women and Sundarbans fishing communities.
Publications include a forthcoming chapter on ‘Immobility Capital’ and a peer-reviewed analysis of Begum Qudsia Aizaz Rasul’s life. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges history, sociology, and development studies, addressing themes of resilience, displacement, and cultural identity.
