Hugo Melgar-Quiñonez is an Associate Professor and Margaret Gilliam Faculty Scholar in Food Security at McGill University's School of Human Nutrition, part of the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. He holds a Medical Doctorate and Doctorate in Sciences from Friedrich Schiller University (Germany) and San Carlos University (Guatemala). His work focuses on global food security, hunger causes, and public health nutrition, with research in over 20 countries. He advises multiple Latin American governments and collaborates with the UN FAO's 'Voices of the Hungry' project. Key roles include editorial board memberships and advisory roles for Sesame Street Workshop's nutrition initiatives.
Research interests emphasize validating food security measurement tools, understanding hunger's link to poverty, malnutrition, and global health disparities. Current projects include maternal-child nutrition in Africa, food insecurity in small farming families, and scaling nutritious potatoes in Colombia. Awards include international recognition for food security research and mentorship.
Teaching includes courses on Global Food Security (NUTR 341) and Advanced Global Food Security (NUTR 641). Collaborations span academic institutions and NGOs globally, addressing hunger through interdisciplinary approaches.
