Hugo Beltrami is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in Climate Dynamics (Tier I) at St. Francis Xavier University, where he is affiliated with the Environmental Sciences Program and Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. He also holds adjunct professor positions at the University of Quebec in Montreal in both the Doctoral Program in Environmental Sciences and the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. Additionally, he is a member of PALMA (Paleoclimate Modeling & Analysis) at Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences (Geophysics, Environmental Physics) from GEOTOP Université du Québec à Montréal (1993), an M.Sc. in Theoretical Astrophysics from Queen's University (1984), and a B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Winnipeg (1980).
Beltrami's research focuses on climate change, paleoclimatology, inverse theory, and the integration of climate models with paleoclimatological data. His work examines energy exchange between the atmosphere and Earth's continental crust, land surface processes, and societal impacts of future climate. His team conducts theoretical and field-based projects to improve land-surface model components of global climate models. His interdisciplinary research spans borehole climatology, climate change, dynamical downscaling, biogeochemistry, and land surface models.
Analysis of Beltrami's recent publications reveals a strong focus on Earth's energy budget, particularly examining how climate models represent energy storage and partitioning within the Earth system. His work frequently investigates air-ground temperature relationships, land-atmosphere interactions, and extreme events using CMIP5 ensemble models and WRF regional modeling. A significant portion of his research leverages geothermal data to reconstruct past climate conditions and validate model simulations, with particular attention to North American climate systems.
- Canada Research Chair in Climate Dynamics (Tier I)
Beltrami actively mentors graduate students, with research fellowships available for PhD candidates (awarded through Memorial University of Newfoundland) and MSc students (through St. Francis Xavier University). His research program encompasses diverse topics including borehole climatology, climate change, dynamical downscaling, biogeochemistry, and land surface models. He has established multidisciplinary initiatives involving co-supervision of graduate students with collaborators across multiple institutions in Canada, the United States, Spain, and Chile. His research is supported through various funding mechanisms that enable financial support of at least $17,000 CAD per year for MSc students in his program.
Beltrami leads an interdisciplinary research team that integrates climate modeling, geothermal data analysis, and field observations. His work connects with international climate research initiatives including CMIP5, PMIP3, and WRF modeling efforts. He collaborates with researchers across North America and Europe, with particular emphasis on paleoclimate modeling, land surface processes, and energy budget analysis.
