Steve Hu is a Professor with a joint appointment in the School of Natural Resources and the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He earned his Ph.D. (1992) and M.S. (1986) in Atmospheric Science from Colorado State University and a B.S. in Meteorology (1982) from Lanzhou University, China.
His research spans atmospheric science, hydrology, and human-climate interactions. Key areas include:
- Climate dynamics: Theory of low-frequency oscillations driving the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), Arctic Oscillation linkages to mid-latitude weather, and precipitation mechanisms in the central U.S.
- Land-atmosphere systems: Impacts of land-use change (e.g., the 1930s Dust Bowl) and regional hydrology (Yangtze River-Poyang Lake dynamics post-Three Gorges Dam).
- Human dimensions: Integrating climate data into agricultural decision-making using social psychology frameworks.
His recent publications (2017–2019) predominantly address climate change impacts on hydrology and land systems. Trends include basin-scale water balance shifts under CO2 forcing, drought attribution to historical land-cover change, and advanced hydrological modeling techniques like stochastic interpolation and WRF downscaling.
Professor Hu teaches undergraduate/graduate courses in Dynamic Meteorology, Physical Climatology, and Climate Change. He actively engages in extension work with agricultural producers to improve climate information usage in farming decisions.
