Hugh L. Agnew is a Professor of History and International Affairs at George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs, holding a full-time faculty position. He specializes in Eastern European history, particularly Czech nationalism, and has served in administrative roles including associate dean and interim dean at the Elliott School since joining GW in 1988.
Education: Honors B.A. in History from Queen's University, M.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford University. His teaching includes courses on Eastern Europe and world history surveys.
Research focuses on Czech nationalism, symbol/ritual use in nationalist movements, and intellectual history. Notable publications include Origins of the Czech National Renascence (1993) and The Czechs and the Lands of the Bohemian Crown (2004, translated into Czech).
Award: 2023-24 Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Palacky University, Czech Republic. His current research explores symbolism and ritual in Czech nationalism, with preparatory studies published on related topics.
