Ray Hudson is a Professor of Geography at the University of Durham, where he has held roles including Chair of the International Centre for Regional Regeneration and Development Studies (1999–present), Director of the Wolfson Research Institute (2003–2007), and Pro-Vice Chancellor (2007–present). He has also directed the Office for National Statistics On-line Manpower Information System since 1986. His research focuses on economic and social regeneration, economic geographies, and environmental-economy relations, with contributions to regional and urban transformations.
He holds a B.A. (1st Class Honours) and Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Bristol (1966–1972), and a D.Sc. from Bristol University (1996). His honors include the Victoria Medal (2005) and fellowships from the British Academy and Academia Europaea.
Dr. Hudson has secured over £22 million in research grants from diverse funders, including the ESRC and EU. He has authored or edited 22 books and over 80 journal articles. His leadership roles include chairing the Royal Geographical Society’s Geography Section and advising the UK House of Commons on coalfields regeneration.
He directs key initiatives such as the Wolfson Research Institute and contributes to global networks like the Dutch Research Institute for Transitions (2005–2010).
