Hoyt Bleakley is a Professor of Economics at the University of Michigan and a W. Glenn Campbell and Rita Ricardo-Campbell National Fellow at The Hoover Institution (2024–2025). His research focuses on economic history, development economics, health economics, and institutional analysis. He holds affiliations with multiple institutions, including the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD), and the Center for Population Economics at the University of Chicago.
His work spans historical topics such as the economic effects of American slavery, the impact of disease eradication (e.g., hookworm and malaria), and institutional preferences revealed through migration patterns. He has also studied labor markets, financial crises, and the intergenerational transmission of human capital.
Bleakley’s publications include seminal articles in top journals like the Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Economic History, and American Economic Journal. His research has received recognition, including the IPUMS Research Award and the Excellence in Refereeing Award from the American Economic Review.
