Howie Chen is a Lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Art, Culture, and Technology Program within the School of Architecture + Planning. He is a New York-based curator and founder of Dispatch, a curatorial production office transitioning to a peripatetic exhibition model. His work focuses on collaborative art production, sociological research in art contexts, and interdisciplinary projects with artists, musicians, and designers.
Chen holds an economics degree from the Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania) and completed the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program as a Helena Rubinstein Curatorial Fellow. He has taught at the Rhode Island School of Design and New York University Steinhardt School. His initiatives include JEQU (researching sociological-cultural economics in art critique), New Humans (a collaborative moniker featured in the 2008 Whitney Biennial), and Collectionof (an online platform for artist productions).
Key collaborations involve exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, SFMOMA, and South London Gallery. His projects often intersect with institutional critique, curatorial methodologies, and transdisciplinary art practices.
