Howard Webkamigad serves as an Instructor – Fixed Term in the Department of Linguistics, Languages, and Cultures at Michigan State University, specializing in the Less Commonly Taught Languages program where he teaches Anishinaabemowin (Anishinaabe language). Born and raised in wiikwemikooNsing on the Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve of Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada, he is a residential school survivor who preserved and dedicated his life to teaching the Anishinaabe language.
His research centers on Indigenous language revitalization through lived experience as a residential school survivor who retained cultural knowledge. He focuses on oral tradition preservation, Anishinaabe linguistic continuity, and intergenerational knowledge transfer within Great Lakes Indigenous communities. His work bridges academic linguistics with community-based language survival efforts.
His sole documented publication "Ottawa Stories from the Springs" (2015) establishes foundational work in Anishinaabe oral history documentation. This MSU Press publication demonstrates consistent focus on preserving threatened Indigenous narratives through academic channels while maintaining cultural authenticity.
Webkamigad has instructed numerous students across decades in Anishinaabe language pedagogy, though formal graduate advisees aren't specified. His teaching approach integrates residential school survival experience with practical language transmission, creating unique educational pathways for language learners without documented external grant support.
