Howard Evans serves as a University Teacher (Lecturer) at the University of Sheffield's School of Architecture and Landscape, where he directs the pioneering Dual Architecture and Landscape Architecture Undergraduate and MArch courses. He concurrently holds directorship at the multi-award-winning practice Chiles Evans + Care Architects, integrating professional practice with academic instruction as a Technology Lecturer and MArch Studio Tutor.
His academic credentials include a BA (Hons) in Architecture, Diploma in Architecture with Landscape Studies (with Commendation), and MA in Landscape Architecture, alongside professional registration with ARB and RIBA. Evans' research examines the critical intersection of architecture and landscape within urban design, with growing emphasis on climate resilience—particularly flood mitigation in cities—and low-carbon building solutions. His work consistently bridges educational theory with practical application, notably through co-authoring publications on school design and sustainable architecture.
Evans' publications demonstrate a sustained focus on contextual architectural responses to environmental challenges, spanning residential conversions, educational facilities, and cultural projects. His body of work reveals evolving expertise from early urban regeneration case studies toward contemporary climate-responsive design, with increasing attention to material innovation and landscape integration in built environments.
His extensive award portfolio reflects exceptional achievement across scales and typologies:
- Architect of the Year, RIBA Yorkshire 2015 (The Knitter’s House)
- Regional Award, RIBA Yorkshire 2019 (The Hollis Building)
- Conservation Award, RIBA East Midlands 2017 (Artemis Barn)
- Manser Medal Nomination 2014 (Underbank House)
- CILASS Inquiry-Based Learning Group Award 2009 (Matter-reality project)
Through course leadership and studio supervision, Evans directly mentors students in design studios while securing research funding for initiatives like the Partnerships for Schools-funded www.imagineschooldesign.org. His practice-led approach manifests in the bureau – design and research collective and Chiles Evans + Care Architects, where collaborative, ethical design processes drive projects addressing societal needs through sustainable spatial solutions.
