Howard E. Gendelman

Howard E. Gendelman, MD, is the Margaret R. Larson Professor of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). He leads the Center for Neurodegenerative Disorders and has pioneered transformative therapies for HIV/AIDS and neurodegenerative diseases. His research focuses on antiretroviral drug development, immune-based therapies, and neuroimmune mechanisms in diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Gendelman holds over 132 patents and has authored 600+ peer-reviewed publications.

Research Interests: Howard’s work spans HIV pathogenesis, neurodegenerative diseases, and long-acting drug delivery systems. He co-developed ultra-long-acting antiretroviral medicines and demonstrated brain immunity’s role in neural damage. His lab explores CRISPR-based HIV eradication and immune transformation therapies for Parkinson’s. Collaborations include Exavir Therapeutics, Inc.
