His institutional presence spans teaching, research leadership, and academic governance.
He earned BS and MA degrees from California State University at Long Beach followed by a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, establishing his academic foundation in mathematical sciences.
His research program centers on combinatorics, graph theory, and discrete mathematics, reflected in courses like Discrete Mathematics for Computing (MATH-190) and Advanced Linear Algebra (MATH-341). This work emphasizes theoretical frameworks applicable to computational problems and mathematical modeling.
Professor Shahmohamad's contributions have been recognized through prestigious honors:
- 2013-14 MAA SEAWAY Clarence F. Stephens Distinguished Teaching Award
- 2013-14 RIT Provost Award for Excellence in Faculty Mentoring
- 2008-9 RIT Richard & Virginia Eisenhart Award for Teaching Excellence
- 1997-98 University of Pittsburgh Culver-Teplitz Award for teaching and research excellence
He maintains active professional engagement as past-Chair of MAA SEAWAY and principal organizer of multiple Midwest Conferences on Combinatorics, Cryptography and Computing (2015, 2009, 2005, 2004) alongside MAA sectional meetings. His academic service extends to mathematics curriculum development through minor program coordination and graduate student mentorship.
