Dr. Hosam Zowawi is an Honorary Fellow at the UQ Centre for Clinical Research, part of The University of Queensland, with his work focused on the Infection and Immunity theme. He maintains his office at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital Campus in Herston, Queensland.
Dr. Zowawi's research centers on antimicrobial resistance, particularly hospital-acquired infections caused by resistant organisms. His work has made significant contributions to understanding the epidemiology of resistant Gram-negative bacteria across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. He has developed innovative diagnostic methods for rapidly identifying antibiotic-resistant bacteria and is passionate about raising public and medical awareness about antimicrobial resistance through social media, public events, and educational campaigns.
His research spans three main areas: surveillance of antimicrobial resistant organisms in GCC hospitals, rapid diagnostics development for superbugs, and public education about antimicrobial resistance. His work aligns with the WHO's Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance.
Dr. Zowawi has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards including the Young Laureate of The Rolex Awards for Enterprise, Next Generation Leader by TIME Magazine, and the Queensland Science and Innovation Champion award. His research has been covered extensively in international media including TIME Magazine, New Scientist, and Nature World News.
He actively collaborates with institutions across the GCC region and internationally, including King Saud bin AbdulAziz University for Health Science, Kuwait University, and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Zowawi also participates in scientific cave expeditions with Francesco Sauro to explore microbial diversity in cave environments, believing these studies may provide insights into the evolution of antibiotic resistance and potentially harbor novel antimicrobial compounds.
