Professor Ian Henderson is an Affiliate Professor at the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences, University of Queensland (UQ), and Director of the Institute for Molecular Bioscience. He holds roles in the Centre for Superbug Solutions and the Office of the Provost. His research focuses on bacterial pathogenesis, protein secretion systems, antimicrobial resistance, and vaccine development, with interdisciplinary interests in plant and Drosophila genetics. He completed his BSc (Hons) at University College Dublin and PhD at Trinity College Dublin.
Research Interests: His work spans microbiology, bacterial virulence mechanisms, and the genetic basis of pathogenesis. Notable areas include Salmonella pathogenesis, centromere dynamics in plants and Drosophila, and the development of novel vaccines targeting Gram-negative bacteria. His studies also address antibiotic resistance and antibody-mediated immune responses.
Articles & Themes: Recent work highlights Salmonella-induced thrombosis mechanisms, centromeric satellite repeat evolution in Drosophila, and structural variation in Arabidopsis. He explores vaccine candidates for Klebsiella pneumoniae and investigates plasmid-driven antibiotic resistance adaptation. His research bridges immunology, genomics, and molecular biology to combat infectious diseases.
Grants & Teams: Funded by ARC grants for antimicrobial resistance solutions and marine biodiscovery. Collaborates across institutions, including Trinity College Dublin and the University of Birmingham. Supervises PhD students in antibiotic resistance, bacterial genetics, and vaccine development.
