Professor Hongwei Wu is a full Professor of Thermofluids and Head of the Energy and Sustainable Manufacturing (ENSM) Research Group at the University of Hertfordshire's School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science. He leads the Monitoring Climate and its Impact (MCI) Research Group and serves as a visiting professor at East Kazakhstan State Technical University. His academic credentials include a BEng and PhD from Beihang University and a joint PhD program with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).
Professor Wu specializes in advanced cooling technologies, renewable energy systems, battery thermal management, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). He has secured funding from Horizon Europe, EPSRC, and industry partners, leading over 20 projects since 2014. His research addresses energy conversion, thermal storage, and AI-driven optimization, with a focus on sustainable manufacturing and climate impact mitigation.
He has authored over 240 publications, including 180 peer-reviewed journal articles in top-tier journals like Applied Energy and International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer. He holds editorial roles in multiple journals and actively participates in academic governance, serving on EPSRC panels and as an external examiner for PhD vivas and program validations.
Key awards include Fellowships from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (FIMechE), Royal Aeronautical Society (FRAeS), Energy Institute (FEI), and Higher Education Academy (FHEA). His projects include novel carbon-based membranes for photothermal vaporization, thermoelectric battery development, and solar energy absorption systems.
