Dr. Billy Wu is an Associate Professor (Reader) and Director of Research at the Dyson School of Design Engineering, Imperial College London. His expertise lies in electrochemical design engineering, focusing on energy storage systems such as batteries, fuel cells, and supercapacitors. He leads the Electrochemical Science and Engineering group and holds roles in the Faraday Institution, including co-investigator on the Multi-Scale Battery Modelling project and chair of the Training and Diversity panel. Dr. Wu also serves as Head of Programme for the MRes in Design Engineering Research and course leader for the 1st year Materials and Manufacturing course.
With a PhD from Imperial College London (2014) in fuel cell hybrid powertrains and a MEng in Mechanical Engineering (2010), his research integrates fundamental science with engineering applications, covering energy materials, continuum modelling, thermal management, and degradation analysis. He has held an Industrial Fellowship with Williams Advanced Engineering and contributes to editorial roles for Energy & AI and Communications Engineering.
His research interests span electrochemical interfaces, material degradation, and interdisciplinary approaches, addressing challenges in battery talent development and global sustainability. He advocates for interdisciplinarity to tackle battery industry shortages and emphasizes the environmental impacts of energy technologies.
Dr. Wu’s work bridges academic and industrial collaboration, with projects funded by the Faraday Institution and industry partners. His contributions include developing predictive models for battery performance and diagnostics, alongside innovations in electrode design and materials science.
