Dr. Hongbing Yu is an Associate Professor of Culture and Semiotics in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Toronto Metropolitan University. He holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics and Cultural Semiotics from Nanjing Normal University (2014). His research focuses on comparative cultural studies, narrative and cognition, ancient Chinese philosophy/religion, mythology, and semiotics as an interdisciplinary inquiry tool. Key areas include the biosemiotic mechanisms of language, cultural memory, and symbolic modeling systems.
Education: PhD and MA from Nanjing Normal University; BA from Hefei University. He has authored influential monographs like On Semiotic Modeling and Living by Models, and edited numerous volumes. Current research emphasizes social rituals, mythical thinking, and cognitive dimensions of Chinese philosophy (Taoism/Zen Buddhism).
Leadership roles: President of the Semiotic Society of America, Vice President of IASS, Secretary General of Asian Semiotics International, and Director of multiple semiotics institutes. He has held research roles at York Centre for Asian Research and Sichuan University’s Institute of Semiotics & Media Studies. Editorial roles include managing editor of Chinese Semiotic Studies and associate editorships for biosemiotics and Semiotica.
Teaching spans undergraduate/graduate courses in semiotics, cultural studies, cognitive linguistics, and Chinese cultural traditions. He emphasizes heuristic methods and critical thinking in pedagogy. His international collaborations and editorial work aim to foster global interdisciplinary dialogue in semiotics and cultural studies.
