Homer Boushey, MD, is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), School of Medicine. He is a leading researcher in asthma, airway inflammation, and respiratory viral infections, particularly human rhinoviruses. His work integrates clinical research, microbiome science, and novel therapeutic development.
Dr. Boushey’s research focuses on bronchial hyperreactivity, airway mucous secretion, vascular permeability, and the role of viral infections in asthma exacerbations. He has pioneered non-invasive methods like sputum induction to assess airway inflammation and has contributed to understanding how airway epithelial injury and repair influence viral susceptibility. His team collaborated on developing microarray-based viral detection and expanding it to identify novel rhinovirus strains. He is deeply involved in studying the interactions between the microbiome (gut, airway, and environmental), immune function, and asthma development, particularly in urban children.
His recent publications (2019–2024) highlight ongoing work in the nasal and upper airway microbiome, antiviral therapeutics targeting host proteins, digital asthma management, and early-life interventions with probiotics. His research spans virology, immunology, microbiome science, and clinical trials, reflecting a translational and systems-level approach to asthma and allergic diseases.
Dr. Boushey has received continuous funding from NHLBI and NIAID, serving as a Principal Investigator for UCSF’s site in national asthma research networks. He is a co-investigator in studies on oligosaccharides in airway secretions and probiotic supplementation in infants to prevent allergic disease. His collaborations include key figures like Dr. John Fahy, Dr. Susan Lynch, and Dr. Michael Cabana.
He has made significant contributions to clinical asthma trials, including studies on inhaled corticosteroids, long-acting beta-agonists, leukotriene antagonists, and tiotropium. He has also investigated biomarkers of asthma control and the impact of beta-agonist genetics on treatment response.
Dr. Boushey mentors numerous researchers and has been instrumental in shaping asthma research policy and clinical guidelines. He has contributed to consensus statements from the American Thoracic Society and European Respiratory Society on asthma control and endpoints in clinical trials.
