Hina Nazar is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with a joint appointment in the Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory. Her work bridges philosophy, literature, and critical theory, focusing on early modern feminist philosophy, Enlightenment thought, and the intersection of education and liberalism.
She holds a Ph.D. in English from Johns Hopkins University (2004), an M.Phil. in Economics and Politics from the University of Cambridge (1992), and an A.B. in English and Economics from Bryn Mawr College (1989). Her research has been supported by prestigious fellowships, including the Senior Research Fellowship at the Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory (2014–16) and a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship at Cornell University.
Her research interests emphasize the philosophy of education, feminist critiques of Enlightenment liberalism, and the role of judgment in literature and ethics. Key works include Enlightened Sentiments: Judgment and Autonomy in the Age of Sensibility (2012) and her 2025 article on Mary Astell’s feminist ethics. Her scholarship often explores how Enlightenment thinkers like Locke and Rousseau framed education and autonomy, while engaging with contemporary debates in feminist and critical theory.
Professor Nazar is a屡获殊荣的教师, having been ranked excellent by students over 26 times since 2011. She teaches courses on Enlightenment literature, feminist philosophy, and critical theory, including graduate seminars on hedonism, liberal education, and women’s friendship in eighteenth-century culture.
Her recent publications reflect a sustained engagement with eighteenth-century British writing, moral philosophy, and the history of the novel. She has contributed to journals like the Review of Politics and the Journal of the American Philosophical Association, while maintaining an active role in interdisciplinary academic networks.
